A customer from Malawi needed to streamline the registration of new farmers into their internal database. Each new farmer had to be manually entered by a field worker, who copied data from the farmer’s national ID card into a form in a mobile application. This process was time-consuming and prone to errors. In Malawi, national ID cards contain a QR code that stores this personal data electronically. The goal was to leverage this format to prefill the registration form automatically.
We developed functionality in the mobile application that enables automatic retrieval of personal data from the QR code on the ID card. The field worker simply opens the camera within the app, scans the QR code on the ID, and the app instantly reads and processes the encoded data. This information is then automatically filled into the farmer registration form, with the option for the worker to review or edit the details before saving.
The entire process significantly sped up registration, reduced errors, and improved the overall user experience. The feature was implemented directly into the existing application, so the workflow remained simple — manual data entry was replaced by a single button press, without leaving the app.
